Top Phones for 2009

The mobile phone industry has changed dramatically in the last decade. Every year, it seems, mobiles are smaller, better designed, and offer more in the way of features, applications and gadgets than every before. This year, a whole range of new handsets are vying for a top position in the mobile fashion stakes; and here are a few of the top contenders.

Vodafone Blackberry Storm
The Blackberry Storm smartphone is currently available only with Vodafone, and is certainly one of the more exclusive mobile phones on the market today. Its features include a 3.25” touch screen which allows high speed browsing, computer-quality email, a super-fast 3G web connection and a high-quality built in media player. Its attractive yet understated design makes it perfect for the fashion-conscious businessperson.

Blackberry Bold
Another one for the discerning businessman, RIM’s Blackberry Bold has just about everything you could want from a mobile phone. Think fast email with a full QWERTY keyboard, GPS, a camera with a flash and zoom, and a high-quality video recorder.

Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition
This mobile is notable as much for its attractive design as for its ease of use and staggering range of features. If you’re looking for a combination phone for both business use and fun, then you’ll love with touch screen, the slid-out keyboard and the 2.8-inch AMOLED display with haptic feedback, as well as the 8-megapixel camera, the video recording at 30pfs, 7.2 mbps connectivity and music playback.

HTC Magic
Much hype surrounded the launch of Vodafone’s HTC Magic in April, and the finished product is certainly worth the wait. A slim model with a fashionably curved design, the phone boasts an Android operating system, a 3.2” QVGA touchscreen display, excellent email access and even instant messaging. Equally appealing for fashionista teenagers and businessmen.

Nokia E71
Winner of the Global Mobile Awards 2009 category for Best Mobile Handset or Device, the Nokia E71 is one of the most popular smartphones on the market today. It has a QWERTY keyboard and two customisable screens for both business and home use, as well as excellent internet access, a state of the art security system and a timeless design. A stylish two-in-one option for the busy professional.

The Future of Phones

The future’s bright; but is it Orange? There’s been a lot of speculation about how the current economic climate will affect mobile phone technology – will consumers revert to the basics, rejecting smartphones with all their mod-cons? On the other hand, perhaps the technological advances made in mobile phone technology will simply prove too alluring to resist. As with most technologies, costs will probably come down, making smartphones more and more accessible to those who couldn’t originally afford them. Only recently Vodafone announced the network exclusive HTC Magic, a next generation mobile phone that will go on sale in April for around £300 (on contract).

Mobile internet was once but a figment of researchers’ imaginations but is now commonly available on a range of networks. Touchscreen and motion sensitivity are becoming more and more advanced. So what can we expect from the future?

- Zumba, (predicted availability is end of 2009). This is being touted as the world’s first fully accurate voice-recognition handset. Intendeing it to be handsfree, designer Dean McEvoy claims that the Zumba will be able to connect you to someone in your contacts book by saying their name. It also promises to read your incoming text messages aloud before sending a reply (composed by speaking rather than typing).

- Nokia Morph: More a concept phone than something you’ll soon see in stores, at the Museum of Modern Art’s ‘Design and the Elastic Mind’ exhibition, the boffins at Nokia showed a concept phone made from flexible and transparent materials using nanotechnology (the idea is that it would ‘blend more seamlessly with the way we live’ not to mention look very cool). Researchers are also exploring phones that are solar powered with smaller, thinner and longer lasting batteries, self-cleaning and sensitive to the surrounding environment (for example sensing the level of air pollution in the area).

- Samsung Projector Phone: It seems the in-built television seen in some mobile phones is soon to be upstaged by Samsung’s projector phone. Set atop the phone is a projector which will beam the mobile phone picture at a nearby surface, perfect for showing videos or static pictures to others. With a prototype already being shown, and a launch in Korea confirmed this could be out in Europe by the end of 2009.

- Paying by phone: As a way of paying for goods, cheques are on their last legs. Fewer and fewer stores accept them and most people find them an inconvenience because it takes so long for money to clear into bank accounts. But could the same be true of cash? Will the £10 note be obsolete by 2015. Some experts think so, because of the advent of paying by mobile phone. A new technology called NFC (Near Field Communication) allows users to swipe their pre-paid phone to pay for items. This technology is already used in Japan where some 20 million people use a Suica (Super Urban Intelligent Card) for rail travel, shop and vending machine purchases so it seems it’s only matter of time before we see it over here!

Simfree Mobile Phones

February 11th, 2009

Free gifts are great, especially when they come with a brand new shiny phone.

However, an alternative to buying a phone on a contract, or paying monthly, is to buy the phone Sim Free.

A Sim Free phone is a phone that is unlocked and can be used on any network. In other words, you are not restricted to being tied to a particular phone network. This gives you the flexibility to choose a tariff that suits you and not one that the phone company have chosen.
